The Sanford Center

Sanford Health is the largest, rural, not-for-profit health care system in the nation.  To ensure residents in the Midwest continue to have access to world-class care, Sanford Health continues to design some of the most innovative facilities patients, physicians, and scientists can find anywhere across the globe, including the new 300,000 square foot research facility in Sioux Falls, SD.  The Sanford Center is home to biomedical research performed by Sanford Research/The University of South Dakota (USD), providing a rich intellectual environment, promoting interactions between scientists.

 

Research Activities

At Sanford Research, we are changing the landscape of science and health care. Our growing team of more than 200 researchers is focused on identifying new therapies and treatments for some of the world’s leading health concerns. It’s our goal to find solutions that will cure illness, eradicate disease and improve the lives of people in our communities and around the world.  Sanford Research/USD is comprised of basic, translational, and clinical research activities across five centers:

  • Center for Health Outcomes and Prevention Research
  • Children’s Health Research Center
  • Cardiovascular Health Research Center
  • Cancer Biology Research Center
  • National Institute for Athletic Health & Performance

Our work is made possible by the generosity and vision of businessman and philanthropist, Denny Sanford, whose gift of $400 million to Sanford Health enables us to expand our research and care delivery with an unprecedented opportunity. The Sanford Project  is one of several initiatives founded by this transformational gift, with a commitment to find a cure for Type I diabetes through beta cell regeneration.  Most recently, a subsequent gift of $100 million by Mr. Sanford has paved the way to establish Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Research, which will pioneer the future of breast cancer research and care through personalized medicine.  We believe that through our passion for discovery and demonstrated commitment to success, we not only attract the brightest and most innovative researchers, but we also give them a place to thrive.
